ZAZZU

TZMP conducted a weekend of winter exercises atop snowmobiles riding in formation in mountain terrain.

Mounted Patrol team members practiced safe equipment handling, winter navigation, passenger protocols, and mounted search and rescue response on snowmobiles at various speeds and inclines.

Participants were briefed on proper emergency survival gear and appropriate clothing for cold weather conditions, as well as high-speed hazards in unforgiving environments, including frostbite, hypothermia, wildlife, hidden obstacles, mechanical failure, avalanche dangers, and getting lost. OUTRIDERS: TZMP personnel operate from motorcycles as lead or screen convoy elements, light ground deployment elements for extended-distance reconnaissance, aerial drone retrieval, message delivery, or route clearance tasks.

Motorcycles present a low profile, high fuel economy, acceleration profile, and maneuverability, as well as possess the ability to access off-road and navigate high congestion areas. This an make motorcycles a good tool for mounted patrol missions despite a higher risk of fatality per mile travelled than other vehicles. Additional training and situational awareness is key to proper motorcycle operation.

DEEP END DOGS: It's a big training day for all eligible K9 trainees when they move from shallow water to immersion training.

After familiarization exercises in rivers, streams, and shallow pools, the K9 units are moved to indoor TZK9 deep pool facilities and don their lifejackets. It's important that trainers avoid causing anxiety or traumatic reactions while the animals take to the water and make their first swim.

OPERATION ICE LAKE: A relaxing paddle with a K9 amongst the floating ice in an alpine lake is the perfect time to practice cold-water procedures.

Sudden immersion in cold water can cause physiological reactions that can overcome mental focus and substantially increase the risk of drowning. Working with K9 units in near-freezing conditions means planning and taking deliberative action.
